 Cleaves, Francis Woodman. An Early Mongolian Loan Contract from Qara Qoto. Cambridge, Mass., 1955, tall 8vo (25 x 18cm), pp. 49, 4 plates, wrappers. A paper in Harvard Journal of Asiatic Studies, Vol. 18,1/2, whole issue included. The paper focuses on an early Mongolian text from the Collection of Mongolian Manuscripts and Xylographs of the Institute of Oriental Studies, Russia. The document was discovered by Colonel P. K. Kozlov at Khara Khoto. With a bookplate of Alexander Brown Griswold (1907 – 1991), a retired investment banker whose art collection included the most comprehensive holdings of Thai art outside of Thailand. In 1987 Mr. Griswold had donated the collection of about 300 works of Indian and Southeast Asian art, mostly from Thailand, to the Walters Art Gallery. Some items are currently on display at Hackerman House, the home of the museum's Asian art collection. For many years, his collection was on public display one day a month, usually in the summer, in the museum wing of his home.
