Snesarev, General Staff Captain A. E. Skhema rasstoianii kr[eposti] Tash-Kurgana ot g. Kashgara i nashikh postov na Pamirakh. [Sketch Map of the Distances Between Tash-Kurgan Fort, Kashgar and Our Observation Posts in the Pamirs]. Original hand drawing sketch map executed in black and red ink, 21 x 18cm, produced and signed by A. E Snesarev, dated 1 March 1901. Rare and important original document relating to British and Russian rivalry in Central Asia. In 1901 Snesarev visited the Pamirs with reconnaissance mission. The same year he visited India and Great Britain to study British imperial and defence policy in India and to gather materials for his book on British India’s defence, The Northern India Theatre of War (1903). The map was produced by Snesarev as a supplement to his confidential report on military and political conditions of the Pamirs which was submitted to the Supreme Commander of the Turkestan Military District. The report enabled Russian military authorities to outline an adequate strategy towards so called “Sarykol question”, a dispute between Russia and British India over Sarykol Pamir, a Chinese part of the Pamirs.
