Mikhail Artamonov (1898 - 1972) - a Russian prominent archaeologist and historian. Artamonov is a founder of the Soviet school of Khazar Studies (khazarovedenie), a late Director of the State Hermitage. Major works are devoted to the history and culture of the Khazars, the Scythians and the early Slavs. In 1929 Artamonov carried out the first independent archaeological survey of the Lower Don (1934 - 1936). The results of his research clearly identified the location of medieval city of Sarkel on the left bank of Tsimlyansk hill fort, a town known from early written sources. Scarce item
